To jog your memory a little, the 2004 tsunami devastated more than a dozen countries, claiming an estimated 230,000 lives (as reported by UNDRR). Around one-third of those deaths occurred in Indonesia, which was among the hardest-hit regions.

In total, nearly 1.7 million people were displaced, with the greatest impact felt across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand.

Along Thailand’s Andaman coast, the disaster proved especially deadly. At least 5,400 people lost their lives, and approximately 3,000 remain missing, according to government figures, as reported by History Channel.

In his upcoming memoir, “Beyond Life and Death: The Way of True Freedom,” the action star looks back on a 2004 family trip to the Maldives that became a life-altering experience.

‘What Happened to the Sea?’ A Morning That Turned Into Chaos

Traveling with his wife, Nina Li Chi, and their young daughters, Li found himself in the midst of a sudden, overwhelming natural disaster, a moment that would leave a lasting imprint on his heart and perspective.

In the excerpt published by People magazine on May 4, the “Expendables 3” star recalls the quiet beginning of the day, standing in the ocean with his daughters as they played.

“Standing in the water while my daughters splashed and laughed, I saw huge waves in the distance. I thought, ‘What happened to the sea?’”

Within moments, the calm gave way to confusion as waves began rushing toward the shore.

“A real tsunami is nothing like in the movies. Without warning, the ocean quickens, and waves start whipping in suddenly.”

As the water rose quickly, Li describes the growing fear as he tried to guide his family to safety.

“My daughters seemed too small, too vulnerable, too easily at the mercy of the gathering waters.”

‘The Distance Between Life and Death’

As the waves intensified, Li found himself in a desperate struggle to stay upright and protect his child.

“Now the water was up to my neck, nearly at my chin. I hoisted my daughter up to sit on my shoulders.”

In one of the most haunting moments, he reflects on how close he felt to losing everything.

“With total clarity, I was aware that the distance between life and death was only four inches between the rising water and my lips.”

The chaos only grew as a powerful wave separated his younger daughter and their caregiver.

“In anguish, I started crying out, ‘Help! Help!’ gargling seawater between shouts.”

Then, just as suddenly as it had begun, the water began to recede. “And then the waves stopped surging.”

Finding Purpose in the Aftermath

After the immediate danger passed, Li describes the emotional weight of the moment, from reuniting with his family to witnessing strangers come together in crisis.

“I saw the glorious altruistic side of human nature on display, capable of spontaneous sacrifice and compassion in the face of life and death.”

The experience stayed with him long after the waters receded. In the quiet moments that followed, Li began to reflect on his life and what truly mattered.

“My awareness of impermanence had crashed over my life with the suddenness of an unexpected wave.”

That shift in perspective ultimately led him to create the One Foundation, an organization focused on helping those affected by natural disasters and encouraging collective compassion.

The emotional impact of that day would later surface in his work, including while filming “Ocean Heaven,” where he found himself revisiting the fear and vulnerability he had felt in the water.

His story serves as a reminder of both the fragility of life and the strength that can emerge in its most uncertain moments.
