Despite being known as one of Hollywoodâs most private couples, Javier Bardem is offering fans an unusually personal look inside his 15-year marriage to Penélope Cruz.
In a new Variety cover story published May 5, the Oscar-winning actor opened up about family life with Cruz, reflecting on their relationship, parenting journey, and the emotional connection they continue to nurture after more than a decade of marriage.
GettyOver the years, they have become one of Hollywoodâs most admired yet low-profile couples, often choosing family privacy over public attention.
Javier Bardem Praises Penélope Cruz as a Partner and Mother
âShe’s a woman I’m so blessed by having had the chance to be at the same time, in the same place, in life,â Bardem said of the actress, whom he married in 2010.
The couple has two children, Leo, 15, and Luna, 12, and has spent years intentionally keeping their private life out of the spotlight while balancing demanding careers in Hollywood.
While speaking about Cruz, Bardem made it clear that his admiration for her extends far beyond their work in film.
âIt’s important that you respect and support your partner, but also that you admire that person for what she is, for what she does,â he shared with Variety.
GettyHe later added, âThe way she relates to her family, to her friends, to our kids, to me, to herself. It’s been a lot of years, and I haven’t seen a hint of malice in her.â
Bardem and Cruz first met while filming “Jamón, Jamón” in 1992, and later reconnected professionally on projects including “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
Javier Bardem Says Working Together Helped Them Reconnect
GettyAlthough both actors remain deeply committed to their careers, Bardem said home life always comes first.
âAt home, we don’t talk much about work,â the “Dune” actor explained. âThough we love what we do. We try to compartmentalize life and fiction.â
Still, reuniting with Cruz for the upcoming thriller “Bunker” proved to be a meaningful experience for the longtime couple.
âItâs a beautiful story that is going to help us see again,â Bardem said of the project.
The actor explained that filming together allowed them to reconnect emotionally amid the everyday demands of parenting and busy schedules.
âBecause sometimes you are immersed in your daily [Expletives] and the kids and the house, and it’s like â when do you sit down and look at each other again? When do you start to breathe again, and take the other person in?â
According to Bardem, the film ultimately became âa marriage storyâ for them in more ways than one.
Javier Bardem Says Family Remains His Top Priority
GettyDespite his busy filming schedule and major Hollywood projects, Bardem said keeping close to his family remains his top priority.
âThe only thing I do pay attention to” in deciding his roles, he shared, is whether they take him “no more than two weeks away from my family.”
The actor is preparing for several upcoming releases, including Apple TV+âs “Cape Fear” alongside Amy Adams, premiering June 5.
He will also be seen in Rodrigo Sorogoyenâs “The Beloved,” which is set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16.
He will also reprise his role as Stilgar in “Dune: Part Three,” which arrives in theaters on December 18.
But beyond the premieres and red carpets, Bardemâs latest comments painted a much more personal picture of what matters most to him now: protecting the life he and Cruz have built together.
