Sandra Bullock has always kept her family close and her private life closer. That is what makes this Mother’s Day post so special. The beloved actress, 61, stepped out from behind the curtain this week to share something she rarely offers the world.
A genuine, unfiltered glimpse into her family life through a collection of never-before-seen photos of her children and her late mother.
‘Happy Mother’s Day to All the Mamas’: Sandra Bullock’s Message Is Pure and Beautiful
Bullock kept it short. “To all the mamas,” she wrote. “No matter how you came to be, Happy Mother’s Day. We are all bound by this honor of a lifetime. Mom and Omi, thank you for teaching me. We miss you. Sorry I was such a brat.”
‘Women Can Do It’: Sandra Bullock on Balancing ‘Practical Magic 2’ and Motherhood
The Mother’s Day post arrives at a meaningful moment for Bullock. After four years away from acting, she is heading back to the big screen, but only on her own terms.
The actress confirmed she agreed to return for “Practical Magic 2” after making sure her children, Louis, 16, and Laila, 12, would be out of school during production. The kids come first. Full stop.
“I’m not going to sacrifice my time with my kids,” she told a panel at CNBC’s Changemakers Summit, as reported by People. “They’d be happy if I was gone, I would not.”
As a single mother she has always been clear about what that role demands and what it means for everything else in her life.
“I do not do my best work if my children are struggling or if they need something and I can’t facilitate it,” Bullock said. “I’m raising my children, not anybody else.”
She was equally candid about the privilege of making that choice, speaking directly to the working mothers who do not have the same options.
“I have the luxury of doing that in this business. So many people don’t. And I understand that grief and that angst when you are at work, going, ‘I’m not where I need to be right now. I’m here being performative and doing my job.’”
Then she left the room with this. “But guess what? Women can do it. We can do 15 things at one time and get it done.”
The Story Behind Sandra Bullock’s Journey to Motherhood
Bullock adopted both of her children in her 40s and has spoken candidly about why that path always felt right for her.
In a 2022 appearance on “Red Table Talk,” she told host Jada Pinkett Smith that adoption was never a backup plan. It was always the plan.
“I don’t know why that was the only route, but I’m so glad the universe had me wait,” she said, as quoted by CNN. “Even though I was anxious and I was eager, and it went nope, you’re not going to do it the way you think you’re going to do it.”
Laila arrived in 2015 at just 2 years old. Bullock described her daughter’s arrival as bringing “pink and glitter in the house,” though she was honest about how challenging the early days could be.
“It was really hard to separate yourself and not be hurt because all you wanna do is love,” she said on “Red Table Talk.” “But guess what? Your love is not going to cut it right then and there.”
As her children grow up, Bullock carries both joy and quiet worry.
She has spoken with particular tenderness about her son Louis and the world he is growing up in.
“With Lou being a young Black man, at one point, sweet, funny Lou is gonna be a young man,” she said on “Red Table Talk.”
“And the minute he leaves my home, I can’t follow him everywhere, though I will try ⦠I pray and pray and pray that I have done a good enough job.”
