Two Pasadena Unified School District trustees to face election challenges, as of filing deadline

Two Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education trustee seats are set to appear on the November ballot with a third potentially added if another candidate qualifies later this week.

Four trustee districts (1,3,5 and 7) were due to be up for election this year, but as of Monday, Aug. 10, only two seats have multiple candidates qualified to appear on the ballot. In District 1, incumbent Kim Kenne will be challenged by Felita Kealing.

The filing deadline for candidates to appear on the ballot was Friday, Aug. 7.

District 3 Trustee Michelle Richardson Bailey will be up against Veronica Elias later this year. District 5 Trustee Patrice Marshall McKenzie was on the only candidate to qualify for the ballot in her district and will therefore be automatically appointed back to the Board of Education for another four-year term.

Yarma Velázquez, the would be incumbent in District 7, announced that she would not be seeking reelection. As of Aug. 10, only Dennis McNamara had qualified for the ballot, however, the filing deadline for that seat has been extended to Wednesday, Aug. 12, because the incumbent did not file nomination papers.

The November election marks the end of a tumultuous year for the Board of Education. Trustees dealt with a failed consolidation exploration process in the spring followed by intense community scrutiny over PUSD’s handling of tree removals as part of soil remediation work.

During the consolidation process, internal communications involving Kenne, Velázquez, Scott Harden and Tina Fredericks appeared to show the trustees coordinating about consolidation outside of open Board of Education meetings.

In May, Harden and Fredericks were served notices of intent to recall by members of the community. Those recall elections will not be placed on the November ballot.
