Besides the 56 bodies found at the South Chicago Chapel last week, authorities also found 56 boxes of cremated remains, officials confirmed Monday.
A spokesperson for the Cook County medical examiner’s office said it is storing the cremated remains that were found at the funeral home, and that the Chicago Police Department is locating next of kin for these remains.
The cremated remains were brought to the medical examiner’s office about 1 a.m. Saturday after the execution of a search warrant at South Chicago Chapel, according to police. Officers were asked to escort the 56 boxes of ashes which police also discovered in the chapel to the medical examiner’s office, according to a report from the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
Also Monday, the medical examiner’s office announced it has positively identified 11 of the 56 bodies found in the funeral home, and that 10 of those families have been notified. So far, two bodies have been released to funeral homes. The office continues to work with local and state authorities to identify the remaining 45 bodies.
