‘Genius’ Hollywood fashion designer to the stars Bob Mackie dies aged 87

Bob Mackie, the fashion visionary who dressed the likes of Cher and Diana Ross, has died aged 87.

A statement on Instagram shared: ‘It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today.

‘He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do.

‘His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.’

The three-time Oscar-nominated, Tony and Emmy-winning creative was known as the ‘Sultan of Sequins’ and the architect behind the iconic styles of industry legends such as Cher’s risquee wardrobe and Ross’ eye-catching ensembles.

Other stars he designed gowns for during his illustrious career included Carol Burnett, Whitney Houston, Barbara Eden, Bette Midler, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Tina Turner and Joan Rivers, as well as men like Elvis Presley and the Jackson Five.

After getting his start under Golden Age era designer Jean Louis, his Oscar-nominated work went on to include Funny Lady, Lady Sings the Blues and Pennies from Heaven.

The late fashion designer was also behind the midriff-bearing two-piece in sparkling black that Cher notably wore to the 1986 Oscars.  He was inducted as the first fashion designer into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Hall of Fame in 2002.

Tributes have started pouring in for Mackie.

‘WE LOVE YOU BOB!!!! We will never EVER forget you and we are all eternally grateful for your art,’ Drag Race star Michelle Visage praised.

Laverne Cox declared: ‘Rest in Power. Thank you Mr. Mackie.’

‘A true legend and an incredibly nice man. What a gift his work has been to his iconic clients and to viewers everywhere,’ Askmrmickey shared.
