There’s no denying that the last few years have made some seriously big waves in the romance book-to-screen media department.
Though this isn’t the first wave we’ve seen of book-to-screen romance adaptations – think Red, White & Royal Blue, Heated Rivalry and The Idea of You — this year certainly seems to be fruitful.
Netflix have Bridgerton of course, and ventured into modern romance earlier this year with People We Meet On Vacation…but it seems to be Amazon Prime everyone is looking to for their YA romances.
In the wait for The Summer I Turned Pretty movie, Prime has gone all in on fake-dating, book boyfriends and YA coming-of-age – there will even be a Christmas rom-com movie staring TSITP’s Christopher Briney, Clashing Through the Snow, though details of that so far are few and far between.
For those that have already watched (and maybe re-watched) The Summer I Turned Pretty a million times, here’s what’s currently on the streaming platform, as well as what’s coming up in the YA and romance genre.
1. Off-Campus
Amazon MGM Studios biggest smash-hit this year has to be Off-Campus. Based on Elle Kennedy’s book series, the show follows elite hockey players and their romances – perfect for fans of Heated Rivalry.
Season 1 follows “the unlikely romance between wry, hockey-hating music major Hannah Wells and Briar U’s womanizing star center Garrett Graham as they strike a deal to help each other out.”
Of course, their fake-dating deal doesn’t unfold as expected. Some have found the show a bit cringe but fans have largely enjoyed, praising the show for showing female desire, body positivity and emotionally intelligent and respectful male characters. There’s also the bonus of high-stakes sports action just to add to the tension.

2. The Love Hypothesis
The Ali Hazelwood cinematic universe is mixing up some chemistry for us.
With author Hazelwood an executive producer of this book-to-movie adaptation, fans are looking forward to seeing the love story between third-year biology Ph.D. candidate Olive Smith (Riverdale’s Lili Reinhart) with professor Dr. Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman) blossom from a fake relationship into something real.
Want to see the chemistry bubble? Give The Love Hypothesis trailer a look below. It will start streaming on Prime Video Sept. 23.

3. Elle
Though everyone knows that Elle Woods and her story revolve more around self-love than romantic tension, the prequel series to Legally Blonde sits firmly in the same bingeable YA category.
Lexi Minetree’s high school version of Elle Woods has big (pink) boots to fill — you won’t have to wait long to watch either, as Elle comes out July 1.

4. Every Year After
Every Year After, based on Carley Fortune’s BookTok novel sensation Every Summer After, has a will-they-won’t-they love affair tale to rival Belly and Conrad.
In fact, the show has already proven so popular that the streamer confirmed it will be back for a second season, based on Fortune’s sequel of sorts, One Golden Summer.
Fans even ‘cancelled their plans’ to binge this show — see if it’s worth calling in sick below.

5. Maxton Hall
It may seem like everyone is dropping book-to-screen adaptations – but Maxton Hall was a bit ahead of the trend with the first season out in 2024.
One of the earliest page-to-screen TV shows to make waves, the German-language series, adapted from Mona Kasten’s Save Me Book trilogy, is set to see a third season hit screens in December.
The show follows students at the prestigious Maxton Hall College, most notably Ruby Bell, a scholarship student, and James Beaufort, a broody trust-fund kid.
While no trailer has been forthcoming, members of the cast were drumming up hype at Prime Video’s inaugural Obsessed Fest fan event in Los Angeles yesterday.

Several other films and shows were also teased by the streamer at Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest fan event at nya Studios in Los Angeles.
Specifically for the fangirls, the streamer highlighted coming-of-age stories, book adaptations and romance as a key focus for the platform.
