Academy Award-winning actress and producer Anne Hathaway has revealed which of her extreme preparation methods for acting roles have “freaked out” some of her directors.

The beautiful star, 43 — who owns her own production company, Somewhere Pictures — has worked with some incredibly famous filmmakers. They include Christopher Nolan, Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, Garry Marshall, Tim Burton, and Jonathan Demme.

Per the Daily Mail, Hathaway was talking to her “Mother Mary” director, David Lowery, on The A24 Podcast on Tuesday, May 19, when she spoke about how she unnerved some other directors in the past.

Hathaway says she is so committed to her acting process that she will spend the pre-production period of any movie obsessively researching and studying its script. Consequently, her persistent questions can be off-putting and anxiety-inducing for some filmmakers.

In her conversation with David Lowery, Hathaway said, “One of the things that I try to explain to directors who don’t know me is that I interrogate everything in prep.”

She continued, “Like everything, even lines that I absolutely love, I just ask every single question. I hold everything up to the light. I poke holes in everything. And I think I know for a fact it’s freaked some of them out.”

The actress explained precisely why she does all of that, saying, “because I’m not going to ask a single question when we’re on set.”

She elaborated, “When we’re on set, I want to be your first lieutenant. I want to execute your vision. I just want to hit the ground running and know exactly what we’re doing and why. We don’t have time for my questions then.”

Lowery confirmed Hathaway’s story through his own experiences, telling her, “I remember that as well. Even though we knew we weren’t changing anything, we went through and talked about every single line.”

It all sounds perfectly reasonable and professional. It also seems to have worked for Hathaway, given her undeniably huge success, which includes a Best Actress Oscar nomination for 2008’s “Rachel Getting Married,” in addition to her Best Supporting Actress win for 2012’s “Les Misérables.”

Hathaway Is Having a Very Busy 2026

Anne Hathaway is in the middle of an extremely busy 2026.

The star has already had two movie releases, in the form of the aforementioned musical psychological drama-thriller “Mother Mary” and David Frankel’s comedy-drama sequel “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”

Next up for her is the release of Christopher Nolan’s epic fantasy action movie “The Odyssey.” That one, in which she plays Penelope, releases on July 17. Soon after, she’ll star in David Robert Mitchell’s sci-fi survival movie “The End of Oak Street,” which releases on August 14, and the psychological erotic thriller “Verity,” which releases on October 2.

Other projects in Hathaway’s near future include an untitled FBI wedding sting comedy, comedy sequel “The Princess Diaries 3,” the crime drama television series “Fear Not,” the drama series “Discretion,” and the biographical action drama movie “Alone at Dawn” (per IMDb).

We look forward to seeing everything Anne Hathaway is set to appear in. Here’s hoping she doesn’t freak any more directors out too much.
