Production on the third season of Big Little Lies is well underway, so what better time to catch up on the 2017 original?

The HBO hit was first billed as a starry miniseries, touting Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern as the leads in this coastal California elite murder mystery.

The series revolves around five parents at Otter Bay elementary in Monterey, with Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgård and Zoë Kravitz rounding out the powerhouse cast.

The show operates on a dual timeline, with the present moment building towards ominous police-tape-lined flashforwards to the season’s conclusion. The finale revolves around the year-end school fundraiser, when a member of the Monterey community is killed.

There’s plenty of drama to tide us over in the meantime, much of it triggered by Jane’s (Woodley) son Ziggy choking Renata’s (Dern) daughter Amabella at school.

Jane is a Monterey newcomer; questions swirl over her murky background and the reason for her move. Eventually, she reveals to Madeline (Witherspoon) that she was raped by a man named Saxon Banks.

Meanwhile (a lot is going on in this first season), it is revealed that Celeste (Kidman) is in an abusive relationship with her husband Perry (Skarsgård), which has started to impact their son’s behaviour at school.

At the season finale’s school fundraiser, it is revealed that Jane’s rapist Saxon Banks and Perry are in fact the same person.

Except, one Big Little Lies viewer has shared how her canny boyfriend put it all together way before that.

Taking to X to share her findings, Grace posted a screenshot of Skarsgård’s Perry pouring himself a drink at the elaborate school fundraiser, where each of the parents is required to dress up as Elvis Presleys and Audrey Hepburns (naturally).

She wrote in the caption: ‘Made my bf watch Big Little Lies for the first time and he said “Oh are you kidding me?? It’s HIM?” bc of the way Perry pours here, which is something I had never noticed… I have been gagged.’

Some asked what exactly the clue was, and Grace explained further in the comments: ‘[Jane’s] memories of the rape are most [sic] just a man’s silhouette and at one point he pours it like this.’

Kicking herself, Val commented: ‘The way I’ve rewatched this at least 3 times and never noticed….’

Hayley agreed, writing: ‘I’ve seen this show all the way through maybe six times and oh my god I feel dumb.’
