Dolly Parton’s sister makes emotional plea after ‘insensitivity from strangers’

Dolly Parton’s sister has issued an emotional plea for compassion after revealing her family has faced ‘incredible pressure and insensitivity from strangers’ in the wake of the country music legend’s death.

Stella Parton, 77, thanked those who have supported her family since Dolly died aged 80 on August 25, but admitted the public nature of their loss has made an already devastating period more difficult.

In a lengthy statement shared on Instagram, she also hit out at the flood of AI-generated content and misinformation surrounding her sister’s death.

‘First let me say, thank you to the ones of you who have shown “genuine” support and love during this time of our family bereavement,’ Stella began.

‘We will be okay in time but each of us will grieve in our own personal way. Every human being experiences pain and loss in life and my family is no different.’

However, Stella acknowledged that grieving one of the world’s most famous entertainers comes with a level of scrutiny few families have to endure.

‘Sadly, because of the way our lives have been lived in front of the public, we have no choice but to be subjected to incredible pressure and insensitivity from strangers,’ she continued.

She particularly criticised the ‘tremendous amount of AI and endless garbage’ that has appeared online since Dolly’s death, describing it as ‘challenging to absorb and or ignore’.

Stella predicted those attempting to capitalise on the tragedy would eventually ‘move on to the next stampede of endless misinformation’, but urged people to consider the human beings behind the headlines and social media posts in the meantime.

Her message wasn’t solely focused on the more upsetting reaction to Dolly’s death, however.

Stella said her sister would have been touched by the enormous outpouring of affection from fans around the world, believing she would ‘be surprised and delighted by the love her family and she has been shown’.

Dolly famously maintained a broad appeal throughout her seven-decade career and often resisted being drawn into potentially divisive public debates.

According to Stella, that was a conscious choice by her sister.

‘She loved her fans and the public in general,’ she wrote. ‘That is the reason she chose not to express her opinions on a lot of things like politics, religion, and individuals in the public eye.’

Stella said Dolly understood how quickly such conversations could become a ‘negative vortex’, something she considered ‘a huge waste of positive energy’.

Instead, she said the Jolene singer channelled difficult experiences from her own life into her work.

While Dolly carried ‘deep wounds’ from their upbringing, Stella said she ‘used her music as a tool and a passion to move people in a positive way’ rather than using those experiences to bring others down.

Stella said she had experienced many of the same ‘slights and insults’ herself, including following the recent loss of her sister.

She then asked fans to take something from the way Dolly approached the world.

‘Finally, I ask that you show more compassion and wisdom as we move forward in life,’ she wrote.

‘Use my sister’s life as an example for tolerance and respect toward others. It’s not about the most clever comments, fake AI garbage, or snarky tweets.’

She encouraged people to consider how their behaviour towards others might ultimately make them feel about themselves, rather than chasing approval from people online whom they will probably never meet.

Stella also used the statement to address comparisons between herself and her superstar sibling, insisting she has never attempted to emulate Dolly despite their close relationship.

‘I haven’t ever tried to be like my sister,’ she said.

Instead, Stella said she had always embraced her own personality and would continue expressing her opinions ‘regardless of what anyone thinks of me’.

Dolly died last month following what her representatives described as a ‘brief battle with cancer’.

The video statement was shared from Parton’s official Instagram account, in which her sister’s son Bryan Seaver shared the news with her fans.

‘This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,’ he said.

‘As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.’

Her family paid tribute to her extraordinary legacy at the time, highlighting not only the music that made her one of the most recognisable artists in the world but also decades of philanthropy.

‘Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience,’ they said in a statement.

‘With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.’

They added that her songs would ‘continue to resonate with people of all ages’ and that her charitable work would leave a lasting impact.

Now, less than two weeks after her death, Stella’s request is a simple one: that the compassion Dolly spent decades championing might also be extended to the family grieving her behind closed doors.
