Emma Stone announces she finally wants to be called by her ‘real name’

Emma Stone has given us the shock of a lifetime by revealing that ‘Emma Stone’ isn’t quite her real name.

The American actress, 35, broke out after starring in teen movies such as Superbad, Zombieland, and Easy A, and is now one of the biggest names in Hollywood.

But, despite her international fame, it seems we didn’t know her at all, thanks to a revelation in a recent interview made by the Poor Things and La La Land star.

The Oscar winner was asked whether she would have preferred to have kept her real name – Emily Jean Stone – at the start of her now-illustrious movie career.

And, looking back on her life, she concurred: ‘That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily. People I work with call me Emily when they get to know me.’

In the chat with the Hollywood Reporter, her The Curse co-star Nathan Fielder initially pointed out to the interviewer that her real name has been Emily all along.

Emma – sorry, Emily – then revealed that she had wanted to go by her birth name but was made to change it when joining the Screen Actors’ Guild, an actors’ union in Hollywood.

‘[I only call myself Emma] just because my name was taken [by another actress in the Screen Actors’ Guild]. Then I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, “I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.”‘

And, unbelievably, the latest bit of information from the Poor Things star has shed new light on something unexpected: Olivia Colman’s Oscars’ acceptance speech in 2019.

During her speech, Olivia thanked her director, Yorgos Lanthimos, who cast her as Queen Anne in the award-winning 2018 film The Favourite, alongside Emma and Rachel Weisz.

She then paid tribute to her co-stars ‘Emily and Rachel’. Last year, a Reddit user had a lightbulb moment: ‘When Olivia Colman won her Oscar she thanked Emily, and I think some people were like “Who the hell is that?” Lol.’

While Emma didn’t win on that night in 2019 for her performance as Abigail Hill, she did win big at the Oscars earlier this year after her starring performance in Poor Things, taking home the gong for best actress.

The film follows Emma’s character Bella Baxter, a woman who has the brain of her unborn child surgically implanted into her own head, as she travels the world for the first time, meeting men along the way.

Upon winning her award, those watching at home seemed to catch something on camera during the star-studded night – Emma referring to host Jimmy Kimmel as a ‘p***k’.

While making a joke about the film’s explicit content, Jimmy seemed to invite the ire of the actress who quietly called him a ‘p***k’ from her seat in the gallery.
