Savannah Guthrie returned to the âTodayâ show anchor desk on Monday, April 6, stepping back into Studio 1A with quiet strength after more than two months away. The longtime co-anchor had been off air since February 1, when her mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona.
NBCAs the search entered its 10th week, Savannahâs return carried a sense of hope, resilience, and deep emotion.
At the start of the morning broadcast, Savannah greeted viewers with a calm, heartfelt presence that reflected both gratitude and relief.
“Pretty shot of the sun coming up. Good morning, welcome to Today. On this Monday morning, we are so glad you started your week with us, and it’s good to be home,” Savannah said in the introduction of her first broadcast back on April 6.
The Meaning Behind Savannahâs Yellow Dress
Savannahâs bright yellow dress carried a meaning far beyond fashion.
The color has come to symbolize hope and quiet strength as her family continues to navigate an uncertain and emotional time.
Inside NBC and across the âTodayâ team, yellow has taken on a shared purpose. Craig Melvin echoed the gesture with a yellow tie, while Studio 1A was filled with yellow flowers, creating a visual show of support.
The symbolism traces back to Tucson, where neighbors rallied around Nancy Guthrieâs family by placing yellow ribbons and flowers near her home, turning the color into a sign of unity and care.
GettyHoda Kotb shared how that gesture found its way to the broadcast.
“We got a suggestion from one of our viewers, and weâre doing the same here,â Kotb said during the Wednesday, February 18 broadcast.
âWe have yellow roses around Studio 1A, and weâre all wearing ribbons as we send our love to Savannah and her family.”
How Yellow Became a Symbol of Support for Nancy Guthrie
GettyThe show of support first took shape in Nancyâs neighborhood, where residents came together in the days after she disappeared, looking for simple ways to stand with her family.
Neighbor Laura Gargano spoke to People and shared how the idea spread and why the color felt so meaningful.
âSome of us put flowers at the front of Nancyâs house, while others who may not have wanted to go down to Nancyâs house, put ribbons on their mailboxes,â Gargano shared. âThe yellow ribbon is a sentiment of hope and support after someone goes missing. I believe the use of the yellow ribbons goes back to hostage-taking in the 1970s.â
According to a People report, the tradition has a long history.
It gained national recognition in 1979 during the Iran hostage crisis, when families of detained U.S. diplomats displayed yellow ribbons as a symbol of hope for their safe return. The gesture was inspired by the song, âTie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.â
A Return Marked by Faith and Symbolism
The timing of Savannahâs return carried a quiet, personal weight. Her first day back fell on Easter Monday, a moment her colleagues felt held deeper meaning beyond the calendar.
NBC“Whatâs wonderful, itâs almost symbolic after Easter and the resurrection, the rising, I think as a family weâll hold hands and help her,” Al Roker said when her return date was announced.
“I had not thought about that. Yes,” Craig Melvin responded.
“Of course you did, Mr. Roker,” Kotb added, as Jenna Bush Hager noted that Savannah had reflected on it, too.
“And [Savannah] had too, you know,” Jenna said.
The Search Continues as Support Remains Strong
Nancyâs case remains open, with no confirmed leads or suspects as the search continues. From the earliest days, Savannahâs colleagues turned their support into action on air.
The âTodayâ broadcast became a space of solidarity, with yellow ribbons worn by the team and arrangements of yellow roses placed throughout Studio 1A, reflecting the same gestures seen in her motherâs neighborhood.
“Weâre all wearing ribbons as we send our love to Savannah and her family,” Kotb said alongside Craig Melvin, Carson Daly, and Al Roker.
Now back at the desk, Savannah is surrounded by that same sense of care and unity, as the message of hope continues to carry through both the show and those standing beside her.
