When news of a TV reboot of The Inbetweeners first broke last year, fans were delirious with excitement.
Created by Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, the Channel 4 sitcom aired from 2008 to 2010 before two blockbuster films were made in 2011 and 2014.
After signing a deal with production giant Banijay UK, a deal was struck to revive its iconic characters Will (Simon Bird), Jay (James Buckley), Neil (Blake Harrison) and Simon (Joe Thomas).
Now, however, the hit comedy series is set to be turned into a stage show.
Following the success of other vintage comedies such as Only Fools and Horses and Fawlty Towers moving to the West End, The Inbetweeners will reportedly become a musical or play.
An insider told The Sun: ‘The beauty of a stage show is that people won’t just be happy with all the muckiest jokes being in there – they’ll be filling the theatre expecting to see and hear them.
‘That’s because like other comedies that have moved into the West End, they’re likely to lift the episodes lock, stock and barrel on to the stage.
‘And fans know exactly what to expect, so there won’t be any complaints from the thousands of devotees who’ll be filing through the doors.’
If The Inbetweeners mirrors the Fawlty Towers stage show, the former was based on just three episodes of John Cleese’s comedy classic.
What does Metro think of The Inbetweeners reboot?
TV reporter Milo Pope shared his thoughts on the rumours…
The series would also join the likes of The Traitors in adapting their product for the West End.
At the beginning of this year, it was announced that The Traitors On Stage is currently being produced.
This also comes after it was reported that Netflix is said to be investing in a multi-million-pound movie reboot, which could star all of the original cast.
A TV insider claimed: ‘Inbetweeners fans will be thrilled and relieved because when talk of a reboot emerged last year, there were fears it might not turn out to be a telly project.
They continued: ‘But this deal will mean the comedy will be back on our television screens for the first time in 16 years, even though it won’t be in its original home on Channel 4.’
Two stars of the original Channel 4 series were also seen reuniting after news broke about a potential reboot.
Fans demanded that Martin Trenaman and Robin Weaver, who played the parents of Simon, be included in any future project after they shared an image of themselves to X.
Metro has contacted Banijay for comment.
