There are few songs more emotionally devastating than My Chemical Romance’s Cancer.

Which is part of why nobody expected the biggest talking point from the band’s latest performance to be Gerard Way accidentally burping into the microphone.

The rock icons kicked off the UK and European leg of their Long Live The Black Parade tour at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium on June 30, treating fans to a career-spanning set packed with emotional anthems.

But one particularly heartfelt moment took an unexpectedly hilarious turn.

As Way performed Cancer – one of the band’s most heartbreaking songs – he appeared to let out a surprisingly loud burp straight into the microphone before seamlessly carrying on as though nothing had happened.

Naturally, fans did not let the moment go unnoticed. Clips of the accidental interruption quickly spread across TikTok, where viewers admitted they were left laughing just as much as crying.

‘Literally the WORST song this could’ve happened during 😭,’ one fan wrote.

Another confessed: ‘This is the funniest video I’ve ever watched. I can’t breathe, I’m laughing so hard.’

‘I’ve been dying laughing at this for 10 minutes,’ someone else admitted.

Others couldn’t help but admire Way’s… technique.

‘Genuinely it was so funny. Why does he burp so nicely though lowkey,’ one person joked.

Some were simply impressed that the mishap served as definitive proof the vocals were 100% live. ‘He definitely escaped any lip sync allegations,’ one fan laughed.

Others questioned why the singer hadn’t tried to spare himself the embarrassment.

‘WHY DIDN’T HE JUST MOVE THE MIC I’M FREAKING DYING OF LAUGHTER,’ another wrote.

The clip also found its way onto Reddit, where fans agreed the timing somehow made the whole thing even funnier.

‘It made my sister and I crack up seeing the clip,’ one fan wrote.

‘Out of all the songs, the fact it was during a song as emotional as Cancer. I imagine a mixture of emotional tears mixed with laughter after hearing Gerard’s burp echo into the mic.’

Others pointed out that perhaps people were being a little harsh.

‘I don’t find it that weird,’ another fan argued.

‘Singers are sucking in air like crazy to sing the way they do. I’m actually surprised it doesn’t happen MORE often onstage in general. Not just with Gerard but any singer.’

It’s a fair point.

After all, spending two hours belting out emotionally charged rock songs in front of tens of thousands of people is bound to produce the occasional unscripted bodily function.

Most performers probably just get lucky enough that theirs doesn’t happen during arguably the saddest song in the set.

The Liverpool show marked the start of My Chemical Romance’s first UK and European stadium tour in years, with the band now set to bring Long Live The Black Parade to fans across the continent.
