The Monday letters page has a good idea for where the next Forza Horizon should be set, as a reader shares some exclusive photos of the Elden Ring film location.

Tighten the belt
If the cost of prices going up on everything is that Nintendo has to make most games for the next few years cross-gen I’m fine with that. We’ve seen what’s happened over the last year in terms of what they do when they make mostly Switch 2-only games and it hasn’t been great.
They can’t do anything to speed things up and they’re not currently doing their best work, so I would be perfectly fine for them to take a step back and concentrate on the design rather than the graphics. They could still do big budget games for things like Zelda and Mario but there’s no way Fire Emblem or Splatoon needs to be Switch 2 only.
I’ve always felt that Nintendo’s sensible budgets are one of their most important advantages over other companies, but they’ve clearly been spending more lately and that’s a dangerous road to go down, I feel. Pulling this back, so that most things have to always work on the Switch 1 seems like a good idea to me.

One to recommend
Watching the new Mortal Kombat film got me in the mood for the games so I picked up Mortal Kombat 1. I forgot how good these story modes are and I’m really enjoying it. You can just tell a lot of love and effort has gone into them and they are the usual over the top storylines but they are great. It’s a shame half of the game is hidden behind a paywall, but I picked the game up pretty cheap so will just pay for what I want.

It’s just a shame hardly anyone plays the story modes as the trophy percentages are so low.

GC: We thought it was good too, but hardcore fans rejected the rebooted timeline and the game sold a lot less as a result.
Obtuse angle
Just wanted to comment on console exclusives, and how it’s had an influence on me.
I bought a PlayStation 3 after I saw your review of Uncharted 2; I already owned an Xbox 360 at the time, because Gears Of War was fantastic! I had no allegiance to any console and still have none now.
My point is that exclusives sell consoles, the graphics of Gears Of War first caught my attention, the groundbreaking immersive gameplay and excitement of Uncharted on the PlayStation 3 carried me away. If we don’t have these experiences with exclusive games, why should we buy another console?
On my past experiences, why should I buy another Xbox console? If I can get the Xbox games on PlayStation (I prefer the DualSense controller) what is the point of even manufacturing another Xbox console?
I guess I’m just struggling to see Microsoft’s angle.
Keep up the good work GC.

The fallen leaves tell a story
I had a look at Conwy Castle this morning ahead of them filming this week. While it still hasn’t been confirmed they’re filming Elden Ring I could definitely see what looks like an Erdtree inside the castle.
The castle itself is very good at hiding what’s going on inside it, since that’s the point of a castle. But I managed to see the tree from the castle walls at the opposite side of Conwy.
While looking to see if I could spot anything (a few wooden bits over the side) I got the impression this would be Stormveil Castle. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how it appears on screen and if there’ll be any flags up later this week during the two days of filming.
I’m hoping to spot Nick Offerman or Peter Serafinowicz if I’m lucky.

GC: That’s very interesting, thank you for these. It definitely looks Elden Ring related.
Arm and a leg
I see they have got a new amiibo in stock on the Nintendo Store UK to pre-order, it is Mineru’s Construct amiibo.
from Tears Of The Kingdom. It looks amazing and it is £24.99.
A little while ago they added a new Splatoon Raiders triple pack to pre-order which is £49.99! The previous triple packs I bought were £32.99 and £38.99; they look amazing in my opinion. I am wondering if the more expensive one will be bigger than the ones I have got for the extra money.

GC: Mineru’s Construct has poseable arms, which might be a first for amiibo. Even so, that’s very expensive.
Think first
Another day, another story of people actually hating games. I’m so glad I avoid all social media. It’s just too easy to lift your phone and spew nonsensical venom over a digital media. Will people ever wise up? Doesn’t look like a game you enjoy? Ignore it and lift a game you will. It’s a simple exercise.
Even better, go walk away the hatred and stop watching these online extremist morons. Have an opinion of your own. Delete X and feel better.

Glad to see Forza Horizon getting so much love since the new one was reviewed. I think there’s no question it’s Microsoft’s best franchise right now and I’m only upset they take so long to make now, because you used to get them one every two years.
Now begins the question of where the next one will be set and to me the very obvious answer is Africa. We’ve had two in North America, two in Europe, one in Australia, and now one in Asia. It would be madness to me if it was anywhere else. I don’t know whether they’d do it north or south or whatever but I’d be shocked if that wasn’t the way they went.

Getting to the point
As I’ve recently turned 49, and now clearly staring straight down the barrel of my half a century on this planet, it was comforting to hear from your Inbox that I’m not the only one who’s gaming preferences and habits have changed over the years.
I too do not have the time, or indeed the patience, to wonder endlessly for hours before I stumble across what I need to do. So, YouTube is a very good tool for me. Most of the time all I need is a point in the right direction and I’m good. I get why games these days refuse to hold your hand as it bulks out the game more, even if they do pretend to dress it up and refer to it as something else by calling it ‘freedom to do whatever you want’ but that’s perfectly OK.
For me personally, as I’m getting older, I’m completely comfortable with handholding as I have very little tolerance these days for not getting straight to the point of the game.
I know my gaming mantra has always been to have fun and I’ve never really cared too much about what other people are playing. I think FOMO (fear of missing out) passed me by decades ago and as a result I’ve played really great games because I didn’t care to keep up with the Joneses.
Anyway, back to my miserable gaming self. Over the last year I’ve levelled up, or down, whichever way you choose to look at it. I’ve invested a lot of time into hidden object games; there’s something comforting about getting home from work and not having a computer game determined to stress you out.
The Mia Faircroft games have been a particular favourite of mine, as was Titanic 2 and the Enigmatis series. I’ve spent pennies on these games, so I’m sure Nintendo won’t be too bothered about a gamer like me sitting on the side of the tracks with my Switch.
My late brother-in-law made me laugh when he said, ‘I realised I was getting old when I started looking forward to watching Micheal Portillo’s train journey documentaries.’ We all say it’s never going to happen to us but it really does and when you reach that point you don’t care.
Anyway, happy gaming people, enjoy it while it lasts and let’s hope it lasts a long time.

I’ve been enjoying the Virtual Boy games on Switch too. I only got the cardboard headset but it’s been a lot of fun. Vertical Force was definitely a good one and I agree that Jack Bros. isn’t that great, they shouldn’t have the mazes so narrow.

That Xbox cloud controller made me think of the Game Boy Advance Micro. I loved that little console and used it all the time, until it got stepped on. I wish Nintendo would re-release it.
