Games Inbox: Will you play the Zelda: Ocarina Of Time remake or GTA 6 first?

The Friday letters page is worried Gears Of War: E-Day is going to be a flop, as one reader recommends Crunchyroll’s free game service.

One or the other
A lot of people have already guessed that it’s the sort of contrary thing Nintendo is likely to do but I think it’s looking increasingly likely that the Zelda: Ocarina Of Time remake is going to coming out at almost exactly the same time as GTA 6. Nintendo is crazy enough to do anything but we’re at the point where we still haven’t seen more than 5 seconds of the game, so we’re going to have get a Direct first, which shows no sign of happening yet.

Even if it’s early to mid-August, that’s going to mean a release no earlier than September and I’d guess much later. Nintendo isn’t going to shadow drop their biggest game of the year, they want that sweet pre-order money just the same as every other publisher.

Now, who knows what Nintendo is going to think when it sees that September and October are jam-packed and nothing is out in November but I think it’s going to be… ‘Nothing is out in November, let’s release it then!’

I’m sure there’s some crossover, but GTA and Zelda aren’t exactly the same audience so I’m going to bet 10 internet points that they release Zelda within a week of GTA 6.

But now, the point of my long, rambling email: which would you play first? If you got both at the same time, would you dive into Ocarina Of Time first or the most anticipate game of all-time? Me personally, I’ll always bet on Nintendo.

Late realisation
It’s a sad inevitability that everyone only realises what a con digital downloads are at the point at which they become the only option. These price cuts on Wolverine, months before it’s even out, are not something you’ll ever get digitally, because there’s only one way to buy the download: Sony’s way.

They want all the money for themselves and they want all the control, so they can take the game away from you whenever they want and stop you from getting a refund. Nothing’s going to change, they’ve made their stand now and most people don’t know or care what’s being lost.

But soon enough even the most casual gamer is going to notice that Sony (and Microsoft, I’m sure) hold all the cards and they just have to go along with it.

E is for Ehh
I’ve read a handful of Gears Of War: E-Day previews now and not a single one of them is above lukewarm. I know that’s exactly what you’d expect after seeing the footage but whoops, what a waste.

The game clearly cost a fortune, that it’s not got a chance of getting back if it’s an Xbox console. Microsoft is going to be on the hook for $100+ million for this, so you know what they’re going to do about that… so good luck to all developers on the job market.

I honestly don’t know why Microsoft is still in the games industry. They’re obviously not going to come out on top and all they’re doing is destroying other perfectly good companies. The time to leave with dignity was long ago and they’re only making things worse.

A penny saved
In response to bigboybent, who went into CeX and found Mario Kart World for £60, whereas Currys had it for £65. It’s cheaper second-hand. £5 is £5. Arguably the biggest Nintendo game and system seller is probably not the best game to use for examples of second-hand prices.

All the factors will lead to it retaining a pretty high price for ever, but they still have it cheaper and why would you spend an extra £5 simply to remove some plastic from the box? It’s a big problem with society as a whole and its critical thinking abilities.

To see £5 as a ‘small’ value and therefore not enough to differentiate between two numbers is illogical and quite simply false. Cheaper is cheaper and the difference between new and second-hand (especially with cartridges) is negligible.

No comparison
All those against Sony scrapping physical discs are allowing themselves to be affected by two things: nostalgia and resistance to change.

Let’s look at PC gaming. It was completely physical before. Then Steam came along, and it’s now the most universal online purchasing platform. Now PC gaming is all digital, and no one’s complaining, so why don’t Sony fans just grow up and accept the change?

I saw that Mr. Do! was available on Arcade Archives today. 1982 is a long time ago. The age of my wife… but don’t tell her. She still thinks she’s 21 (smiley face). It came out in May, and I thought I had been keeping up with it. Mr. Do! though! They had this game at the caravan park I used to visit, and my dad always used to watch me do the top score on it. Wanting me to excel in life he got me a means to play games, but never Mr. Do! (sad face).

A few people wrote in recently about Hamster and the Arcade Archives. For anyone of a certain older age it’s got to be worth a look, or anyone of any age, as some are really playable even today.

Usually their screenshots of the games you’re purchasing is pretty much bang on and you’ll remember the name of the game you’re wanting to buy.

Been blasting Mr. Do! all day, well for a few hours. I’ve been getting complaints because it’s so loud from my missus but it’s because the game has such a wonderful soundtrack. Maybe it’s four or five songs and a few sound effects but it’s amazing and you’ll end you whistling it while you’re out.

Had the sound when you lose in my mobile for ages.

GC: Despite its ubiquity in arcades Mr. Do! saw surprisingly few home ports. There was no Spectrum or NES version, and it never appeared on any Sega console. There was a SNES game, but it arrived 12 years late and with very few new features.

I have just found out that Crunchyroll subscriptions include access to a collection of free games similar to Netflix.

While the majority are anime-inspired visual novels, there are some highly rated gems like Metal Slug Tactics, Crypt Of The Necrodancer, Dungeons Of Hinterberg, Pepper Grinder, Shogun Showdown, and more. Apparently, this was added a few years ago and I had no idea.

Expert opinion
In response to Wotan and the user review scores of Splatoon Raiders; no, we can’t trust user review scores – but no more or less than a paid reviewer.

For context, they mention about it being in the top seven games of all time. For me, it’s most definitely not, but I also didn’t rate The Last Of Us – I found it so slow, and not ‘my kind of game.’ I gave up a good few hours in, trying to give it it’s chance, as I’m predominantly a single-player gamer, due to the way I’ve personally evolved in the last 15 years or so.

I also don’t think it’s in the top seven Nintendo games (whether first party or otherwise). I could easily name Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, GoldenEye 007, Tetris, and Mario Kart 8 above them, off the top of my head, as part of my top seven.

But equally, I do think it’s one of the best Switch 2 games at the moment. I’ve finished the main story and am now grinding for the best loadout (if you know, you know) and one of the few I’ve genuinely stuck with, along with Mario Kart World and Bananza, to complete as much as possible – so easily in my top three for the console.

Add to that, whilst I have the other three mainline Splatoon games on the original hardware, I’ve never been that fond of them, as I’m not too stuck on competitive shooters (my reflexes are just not good enough for the young’uns) and I absolutely love the game – even elsewhere I’ve given it a 9 via personal opinion.

Now, I’m not saying that a lot of people are like me and have been screaming for a more single-player focused version of the game but coming relatively full circle; it can show how in both user and professional reviews, bias can easily be implemented, even unconsciously.

If I give it a 9, and others do, that automatically puts it at 90%; but then you have to consider things like is this what some/all users wanted, do they enjoy the snappy pick up and play levels (like me), are they happy with the price point (even if they are, as stated ‘no-name sites’), or maybe just starved of Switch 2 originals and gave it a high score on that?

I can see personally why the scores are high when you potentially consider those factors – and that the thing also with an opinion; it’s exactly that. What I love, GC and some users (readers, gamers) may not.

I do find it odd, the ranking at the moment; but with the world in a bit of limbo, let people have their opinions on a game. The way I see it, it’s not hurting anyone!

GC: We can’t help but feel a little hurt that you apparently don’t trust us, or any other established review source, more than a random user review.

There were some pretty impressive tornadoes on Giant’s Deep in The Outer Wilds. Or were they seanadoes?

Maybe that Reader’s Feature was right and there should be a video game of The Odyssey, if that Assassin’s Creed game is doing so well just on word association. I’d be interested.
