Forza Horizon 6 has shown some Xbox players are still buying physical games, as it beats Nintendo’s latest adventure with Yoshi.

The month of May has been stacked when it comes to new games, with 007 First Light and Mina The Hollower set to round off proceedings before Summer Game Fest next month.

James Bond aside, all of May’s biggest titles were clumped together in the same week. Forza Horizon 6 was first out of the gate on May 19, followed by Yoshi And The Mysterious Book on May 22, and Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight a day later.

Naturally, that’s led to a heated sales battle, and on the UK physical chart at least, the brick-based caped crusader has emerged victorious.

Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight debuted at number one on this week’s chart (via Gfk), ahead of Forza Horizon 6 and Yoshi And The Mysterious Book.

While Forza Horizon is massively popular, its high position is perhaps surprising when you consider this chart only accounts for physical sales. Forza Horizon 6 launched on Xbox Series X/S and PC, and Xbox games typically don’t sell well at retail because of Xbox Game Pass.

As noted by The Game Business co-founder Christopher Dring on X, the last Xbox game to crack this chart’s top five was Starfield in 2023 – and that had a physical version on PC as well.

In comparison, Nintendo games usually sell well at retail because they’re geared towards families. Yoshi And The Mysterious Book was never going to sell Mario or Zelda numbers, but Nintendo might not be entirely happy with this result.

Dring, however, does note that there were only 300 units separating Forza Horizon 6 and Yoshi (and the latter is currently number one on the Nintendo eShop), so maybe it’s still doing solid numbers.

Yoshi And The Mysterious Book won’t have been helped by its weak marketing campaign though, which makes it seem like a game only for very young children. But while they’ll certainly enjoy watching it being played it’s actually a far more nuanced and involved game than the trailers make it seem, and one of the best exclusives on Switch 2.

The big winner here is Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight, which managed to land the top spot despite launching several days later. It was released across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a Switch 2 version set to launch at a later date.

Elsewhere on the chart, Resident Evil Requiem is holding strong at number four, followed by Hogwarts Legacy, Pokémon Pokopia, and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. You can check out the full top 20 below.
