Naked Eyes singer Peter Byrne dies aged 74 after ‘brief illness’

Peter Byrne, singer for New Wave band Naked Eyes known for their synth-pop sound, has died aged 74.
The group confirmed he had died ‘peacefully’ on Monday, September 14, following ‘a brief illness’, but didn’t share any further details.
Naked Eyes had a fleeting time in the spotlight with hit song Always Something There to Remind Me.
Forming in 1982, they released two albums together and scored a top 10 hit with their Burt Bacharach and Hal David synth-pop reimagined cover.
They also scored three other top 40 hits: Promises, Promises, When the Lights Go Out, and (What) In the Name of Love.
Byrne and his co-founder Rob Fisher were often associated with Tears for Fears, having known Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal from an earlier band.

In 1984, Naked Eyes called it quits after their second album, Fuel for the Fire, failed to have the commercial success of the first.
Due to their incredibly short run, fans never actually saw them perform live together, as they never toured before the split.
Fisher died on August 25, 1999, after complications from surgery for bowel cancer. He was just 39.
In 2001, after years away from the spotlight, Byrne released a solo album and then began performing under the Naked Eyes name in 2006.
Byrne released a third album that year, which included a mix of covers and Naked Eyes hits, but it wasn’t until 2021 that he released new music – the first time in 37 years.
Elsewhere in his career, Byrne worked as a backing singer for Stevie Wonder on the track Part-Time Lover and as a songwriter.
He wrote the track I Am The Cute One for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, which was released in 1993 by the then seven-year-old twins.
Byrne’s family, including his three children Merlin, Dylan and Chloe, are set to host a private memorial service for the singer.
