Nancy Guthrie Update: Former Sheriff Says Crime Scene Was ‘Corrupted’

Pima County Sheriff's Department investigating the Nancy Guthrie case.

In the nine weeks since Nancy Guthrie first disappeared after being taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona, there has been seemingly no breakthrough in the investigation. While law enforcement have released images of the alleged suspect and made a number of announcements asking for tips, Nancy Guthrie has not been located and her kidnapper has yet to be identified.

This has led to criticism of the Pima County Sheriff’s department and the FBI, the two agencies leading the investigation. As Nancy Guthrie’s friends and family, including NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, wait for answers, a former sheriff has revealed that the crime scene at the victim’s residence was “corrupted” during the early stages of the investigation.

Ex-U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona Says Law Enforcement Corrupted Crime Scene

The former Pima County Sheriff and U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona has criticized the Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos and his department’s handling of the Nancy Guthrie investigation. In particular, Carmona was critical of the way that the law enforcement agency handled the crime scene.

During an episode of News Nation’s “Brian Entin Investigates,” Carmona explained why he believes Nanos and his team made a number of procedural errors that have hampered the investigation. The main issue, according to Carmona, is that Nanos declared the crime scene open too soon.

Describing this as a “fundamental error,” Carmona says that “once it has been corrupted, that’s the end of it” and this integrity can never be fully regained.

“That’s not something a sheriff does,” Carmona said. “It’s the lead detective that’s out there that says, we can open this area now because we have made this determination that all of the evidence necessary has been photographed, bagged, tagged, and so on.”

Carmona also commented on footage that appeared to show a pizza delivery vehicle drop food off at the victim’s home during the early stages of the investigation.

He explained, “If you’re going to court and you’re making a case, a defense attorney says, ‘That crime scene was corrupted — you had people delivering pizzas.’ How do we know this is real evidence? You have not maintained the integrity of that space.”

An inside source has revealed has revealed that Nancy Guthrie’s home showed no signs that a violent crime took place. They described the house as  “immaculate” and that there were “no signs of assault” inside, suggesting that there was no struggle inside the home.

“[This] makes sense when you go back to what Savannah Guthrie said, that when her sister and brother-in-law showed up, they weren’t sure what happened,” said News Nation reporter Brian Entin. “She just basically vanished at one point. They even thought maybe an ambulance had taken her away because, you know, there was now, according to the source, nothing inside the house that appeared totally out of the ordinary.”
