The first look photos of the upcoming Enola Holmes 3 movie have left many scratching their heads.

After rising to fame in Stranger Things, in 2020 Millie Bobby Brown had her first big screen starring role in the mystery film Enola Holmes.

In it she starred as the titular character, who was the teenage sister of the famous Victorian-era detective Sherlock Holmes, played by Henry Cavill, and government official Mycroft Holmes, played by Sam Claflin.

Based on The Enola Holmes Mysteries series by Nancy Springer, critics called the first film ‘fun and charming’, with a sequel then released two years later.

A third film is now also on its way – this time directed by Adolescence’s Philip Barantini.

This week Netflix has released a series of sneak peek pictures featuring Enola in a ‘sun-soaked new locale, juggling her potential nuptials to Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) and a challenging new case which might involve a deadly-looking fire’.

However, a detail in one caught the attention of many after they were left perplexed by the fact that although the film is set in 1885 – Enola is sporting a full gel manicure with acrylic extensions.

‘Why does Enola Holmes have a fresh gel set is the late 1800s?’ user Nuna posted on X.

‘This is so funny but also like come on it’s a period piece let’s try and make it accurate LOL,’ Lauren shared.

‘NOBODY back then had nails like that. It’s like they just threw the costume on her and called it a day,’ hopfiIms added.

Meanwhile a post from ceyda, which jokingly declared ‘pulling up to 1885 with a fresh gel set’, garnered over 220,000 likes.

In response, BoMacro commented: ‘Historical accuracy left the chat, but the nails stayed flawless.’

‘Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s a temporal rift in the script. Either way, she’s ready to claw her way to the truth,’ capital 20 joked.

‘What’s even the thought process behind that decision,’ cassiopeia questioned.

Others called them ‘time traveller nails’. Gel manicures were first created in the early 1980s, nearly a century after the time period Enola Holmes is set in.

The latest film in the series will also star Helena Bonham Carter as Enola and Sherlock’s mother Eudoria, Himesh Patel as Dr John Watson and Sharon Duncan-Brewster as the villainous Moriarty.

The official synopsis has teased of the upcoming release: ‘Adventure chases detective Enola Holmes to Malta, where personal and professional dreams collide on a case more tangled and treacherous than any she has faced before.’

Writer Jack Thorne (Adolescence, Lord of the Flies, The Hack, Toxic Town) has kept details of the plot largely under wraps but recently told the Radio Times: ‘I had some unfinished business with Enola Holmes, that I wanted to do in a totally different way, that told a different side of British society. I always thought of Enola Holmes as a sort of cheat, as a way of understanding 19th century British society.

‘The first film was about land reform and vote reform, the second film was about the birth of the unions, and the third film looks at our colonial history. And just trying to capture those different elements I find really exciting, but also trying to capture a Phil Barantini film, and also trying to capture what it is to write for Millie now.’

Meanwhile Millie told Netflix’s Tudum that her character was stepping into a version of herself that ‘feels much more defined but still evolving’.

‘She’s built something for herself, which is amazing, but she’s also questioning what she wants next.

‘I think that’s something so many people can relate to. There’s this pressure of, “Ok, I’ve achieved this…but who am I now?”.’

Enola Holmes 3 will be released on Netflix on July 1.
