Renegade Nell to Gladiators: The hangover TV to help you survive the bank holiday weekend

We’ve got your Easter weekend sorted (Picture: BBC/Disney/ Getty)

The sofa called and it wants you back this Easter bank holiday weekend for a TV binge.

The four-day weekend is here, and if you’re spending it terrorising rooftop bars (weather permitting) or socially exhausting yourself then it’s likely you’ll also be craving some time at home doing nothing.

Well, nothing obviously means watching TV and there are some goodies on offer.

From reality TV to fantasy series, the broadcasters and streamers have got some excellent options to add to your enjoyment of the next few days.

Grab your Easter eggs, put the kettle on, and fluff your cushions then get comfortable and tuck into one of these shows…

Are you a Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbs or Samantha Jones? It’s time to really give a definitive answer to that question and the only way to reach a conclusion is by watching all six series of the noughties show. Luckily, all six series are arriving on Netflix this Easter Monday for long-term fans, or newbies (who may find certain aspects a hard watch, but stick with it!)

Plus, if you’re feeling any kind of hangxiety these girlies will remind you that it’s perfectly okay, actually encouraged, to let your hair down. Although we can’t deny that Charlotte in season 3, episode 1 is sometimes our post-night-out spirit animal. ‘My hair hurts,’ is a mood.

The TOWIE drama continues (Picture: ITV)

You may not have watched The Only Way Is Essex since the days when James ‘Arg’ Argent and Lydia Bright were parenting micro-pig Mr Darcey (who turned out to be an actual pig). Well, the ITV series is still here and currently airing the 33rd series.

Arg and Lydia have moved on, so did many viewers – for those of you who dropped off while Prince Harry was still a single man, a nostalgic return to TOWIE could be just what your brain needs, honey.

Don’t worry, you will recognise Amy Childs and Lauren Goodger who have returned to the show after breaks. (If you’re left craving more from Essex personalities then you can watch Chloe Sims’ reality show House of Sims on Netflix).

The Only Way is Essex airs March 31 9pm on ITVBe. It is available to watch from 8am on ITVX

If you feel strong enough to watch a film and not just bite-sized episodes then Road House could be for you.

In the reimagining of the 80s cult classic Jake Gyllenhaal plays bare-knuckle fighter Dalton (the original was led by the late Patrick Swayze).

After his career ends in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) after the death of an opponent, he takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse. Soon he discovers that this paradise is not as it seems. There’s a lot of Dalton in unbuttoned summer shirts, which isn’t bad to look at.

The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer reaches the halfway point this weekend.

Watching Oti Mabuse, Gabby Logan, David O’Doherty and Suzi Ruffell whip up some cakes while Alison Hammond and Noel Edmonds circle the tent getting the goss is perfect easy viewing.

The fundraising show has already given us many glorious moments, including Jodie Whittaker accidentally smashing a mixing bowl which is 12 seconds of chaos, and joins Alison losing the oven door in the GBBO history books.

The Gladiators reboot has been a roaring success, securing incredible ratings – a total of 8.7 million watched in its first seven days making it the biggest entertainment launch for the BBC in seven years.

BBC has already confirmed it’s coming back for a second series, but firstly, we’ve got the small matter of the current one to wrap up. Watching other people do physical exercise while the most exertion you’re doing is breaking your chocolate egg into smaller pieces is iconic behaviour.

If you fancy a fantasy series to take you far away from any suffering you may be going through, then Renegade Nell is your bank holiday vibe.

Written by Sally Wainwright, who created Happy Valley, and with Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland in the lead role, it’s a winner.

Nell is not your average girl, she’s got superhuman powers, that are within her vernacular at crucial moments to give us bullet-dodging and villain-throwing scenes.

If you’re a person who likes to binge-watch a series, rather than wait for weekly drops then you may have let True Detective pass you by. Now, all six episodes of Night Country are available, meaning you could start the mystery over breakfast and know whodunit by lunchtime.

It was one of the most satisfying storylines in the franchise’s history with Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) solving how eight scientists ended up dead in the wilderness.

The snowy location almost feels like another character in this cinema-worthy fourth outing, and the supernatural aspects keep you guessing where this drama is going to go. Also, it’ll probably make you feel lucky for any sun we do get in the UK.

True Detective is available to watch on Now
