West End star Ruthie Henshall claims she enjoyed ‘a lot of very hot sex’ with Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh.

They met in 1988 when she was 21 and he was 23.

She was in the chorus for Really Useful Group’s production of Cats, and he was working as a production assistant at the company.

The pair first slept together the following year in January 1989, and their on-off relationship carried on until 1993.

Henshall revealed new details of their affair to The Times, who she spoke with ahead of the release of her new memoir, The Showgirl and the Prince.

Addressing the rumours surrounding Prince Edward’s sexuality at the time, the 59-year-old said: ‘Believe me, [homosexuality] is not part of that man’s past.’

The musical actress endured abuse as a child, and said that Prince Edward helped make her feel ‘clean’ during sex.

She explained that having gone through abuse, victims can feel they’ve done something wrong as a child.

For Henshall, she said: ‘I never felt clean. It was always like I was trying to wash it off me… He was so gentle and loving, and there was not an ounce of aggression in him.

‘There was something safe about him, so I felt really good about my body. There was so much love there.’

Despite wanting to become Prince Edward’s princess, the publication reports that he told Henshall he ‘couldn’t put [her] through the job’, and that ‘you would never subject the woman you love to the job’.

She also revealed that he said recently he was trying to protect her.

Speaking about his current wife, Duchess of Edinburgh Sophie, Henshall said how clear it was that they loved each other very much and were one another’s best friend.

The performer shares two children with her ex-husband Timothy Howard.

Henshall said that she met with Prince Edward, who told her she had ‘every right’ to tell her story.

She told him it might make him blush a little, but that she had treated the whole thing ‘very respectfully’.

Prince Edward’s private secretary declined to comment.
