With Glastonbury taking a break this year, speculation is hotter than ever about who will headline next.
When the festival returns to Worthy Farm in 2027, big names are expected, with the likes of Harry Styles and Taylor Swift currently favourites for those coveted slots.
And now, a new music superstar has entered the mix, with reports claiming Shakira will be returning.
The Hips Don’t Lie hitmaker, 49, played live on Glasto’s Pyramid Stage for its 40th anniversary in 2010, which you’ll likely remember as the year of Waka Waka, the infectious World Cup anthem that still gets people dancing to this day.
According to sources, Glastonbury organisers are keen for her to make a comeback, hot off the success of the highest-grossing Hispanic tour of all time.
As reported by The Sun, the Colombian performer said: ‘It’s such an iconic place to perform. I’d love to go back to England and perform at Glastonbury.
‘That would be like the cherry on top for this amazing year I’ve been having.’
Indeed, the wins just keep flooding in for Shakira, whose global stardom continues to rocket.
In 2020, she headlined the Super Bowl halftime show with Jennifer Lopez, with guest appearances from J Balvin and Bad Bunny.
The broadcast won a slew of awards and became the most-watched halftime show on streaming platforms, with an additional 103million television viewers.
From there, Shakira – whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll – released her 12th studio album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, her first in seven years, scoring her number ones in various countries and her fourth Grammy win.
Shakira began touring the record last February and has broken numerous ticket sales, grossing over $420million with its first 86 concerts and becoming the fifth-highest-grossing tour ever by a female artist.
It’s also seen the Queen of Latin Music, who had her first UK hit with Whenever, Wherever 25 years ago, leave a significant cultural impact.
But that’s not to say it’s been an easy few years for Shakira, as behind her chart-topping lyrics has been major heartbreak.
In June 2022, she and Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué, 39, announced their split after 11 years and two children, Milan and Sasha, together.
‘We regret to confirm that we are separating,’ their joint statement read. ‘We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect.’
The fallout was messy, though, as it emerged that the footie star was allegedly unfaithful. Shakira went on to describe the separation period as the ‘darkest hours of [her] life,’ pouring her sadness out into her songwriting.
So, should she perform at Glastonbury next summer, fans can probably expect a mixture of her upbeat hits and more personal, emotional tunes.
Who else could be headlining Glastonbury in 2027?
We’re probably quite a while away from any official announcements, given that this is a fallow year for Glastonbury to maintain its farming ground, but that hasn’t stopped people from talking.
Having just started his new stadium residency tour, Harry Styles is a big favourite for a Pyramid set, with reports earlier this year declaring that his showmanship ‘feels built’ for such an iconic stage.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift is hot on his heels, having already had a brief taste of Glasto buzz before it was cancelled due to the pandemic.
She was meant to headline the festival’s 50th anniversary, sitting atop the bill with Beatles hero Paul McCartney and Motown legend Diana Ross.
Alas, it wasn’t to be, which means Taylor’s name gets put back out there year on year.
Previous reports have claimed the Blank Space songstress is ‘a dead cert’ for 2027, with plans in motion and ‘going ahead positively’.
Other artists who could headline next year include Celine Dion, who recently confirmed her return to the spotlight after stiff-person syndrome brought her live shows to an abrupt end.
A Paddy Power spokesperson told Metro earlier this year that Celine’s odds were sitting at 10/1, teasing that ‘it might be time to pack the wellies and the tissues for Glasto, as there might not be a dry eye in the field if Celine Dion takes to the stage at Worthy Farm’.
Another A-lister who has raised their hand is Kylie Minogue, with the Aussie pop princess, who performed in 2019, telling us she would ‘100% say yes’ if Emily Eavis made the phone call.
Basically, those golden headline slots are anyone’s for the taking right now, but judging by the rumours we’re hearing, Glasto 2027 is sure to be worth the wait.
