As the search for Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, continues, the body of a woman found in a Scottsdale canal has been found, which initially sparked fears that it might be the “Today” show co-anchor’s missing mother. Now, the woman has been identified, and our hearts go out to her loved ones.
‘Someone Walking Along the Canal Saw the Body in the Water’
CanvaOn Saturday, March 28, the Scottsdale Police Department shared a message on X.com, saying, “A death investigation is underway after an adult woman’s body was recovered from a canal near Indian Bend and Hayden Roads on March 28th. Police and fire personnel were first called to the area around 8 a.m. after someone walking along the canal saw the body in the water.”
As well as detailing what the police department was doing during the following investigation, they added, “Responding police and fire personnel coordinated with SRP and CAP to recover the body from the water and begin the death investigation. Scottsdale detectives and crime scene specialists responded to the scene to collect evidence and thoroughly document the scene.”
“Due to the condition of the body, investigators are initially unable to confirm if there are traumatic injuries present,” the message continued, while also noting that “[t]he investigation is still in the early stages as detectives work to confirm the identity of the person and how they ended up in the canal. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner will ultimately determine the cause of death.”
The Woman in the Canal Has Been Identified as Passion Schurz
On Sunday, March 29, the Scottsdale Police Department posted an update, writing, “Working with the Maricopa County Medical Examiner, Scottsdale detectives have made an initial identification on the woman found dead in a Scottsdale canal the morning of March 28th. The woman has been initially identified as 28-year-old Passion Schurz, who was reported from the Salt River-Pima Maricopa Indian Community on March 22.”
“The initial identification was made based on specific tattoos, her physical characteristics, and clothing description,” the post noted. “Dental records will be used to confirm her identification as soon as possible.”
Stating that the “investigation is not complete, Scottsdale detectives are working with Salt River Police investigators and the medical examiner to thoroughly investigate this case and piece together how Passion died and ended up in the canal.”
“Passionâs family has been notified of this tragic outcome, and Scottsdale PDâs crisis counselors helped with the notification and are working to support the family along with Salt River Police Department resources,” the post continued. “This is not the outcome anyone looking for Passion Schurz was hoping for. We extend our most heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and community during this difficult time.”
