An 18-year-old man is facing charges he gunned down his father earlier this week in southwest suburban Oak Lawn.
The deadly shooting happened Monday in the 10400 block of South Austin Avenue, where patrol officers responded about 10:45 p.m. to a report of a person shot. Inside a home there police found Ayed Mdanat, 50, suffering from gunshot wounds, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Mdanat was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later, at 11:18 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Tuesday determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
A large-caliber firearm was recovered at the scene, police said.
Responding officers identified the shooter as the victim’s son, 18-year-old Sami Mdanat, who had run off, but the 18-year-old was found a short time later near the scene, police said.
Detectives executed several search warrants, which resulted in murder charges for the son, who was scheduled for a detention hearing Thursday in Bridgeview.
Details from the hearing were not immediately available.
