A registered sex offender who already has a child pornography conviction was released from custody pending trial after facing new charges of possession of child abuse materials following a three-year long investigation in Aurora, police said Thursday.
Robert Terry May, 38, was charged with ten counts of possession of child sexual abuse material, with a prior conviction and five counts of failure to register as a sex offender, both of which are felonies, police said in a statement.
May, of the 700 block of Serendipity Drive in Aurora was arrested April 29 without incident and taken to the Kane County Adult Justice Center, where he appeared for a detention hearing, and the judge released him under pretrial supervision conditions, police said.
May, who has a prior conviction in Kentucky related to child pornography offenses in 2014, is due back in court on May 28.
In August 2023, Aurora police began a probe after after receiving information through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force, about suspected online child exploitation activity, according to police.
As part of the investigation, detectives executed search warrants, conducted forensic examinations of electronic devices, and reviewed digital evidence obtained through multiple online service providers, police said.
