Amos Kipruto knocks off defending champion Jacob Kiplimo to win men’s Chicago Marathon

Having finished third in 2024 and second in 2025, Amos Kipruto hoped that trajectory would take him to the front of the 2026 Chicago Marathon.

It did.

Kipruto took control in the second half of the race, beating defending champion Jacob Kiplimo. Kipruto finished in an unofficial time of 2:01.09, outpacing Kiplimo’s fourth-place time of 2:04.18.

Tadese Bikila finished second at 2:02.56.

For Kipruto, the win is his second at a major marathon, joining his 2022 win in London.

Kiplimo was attempting to become the first runner to repeat in the men’s division since Samuel Wanjiru pulled the double in 2009 and 2010.

There was no suspense here, as Marcel Hug won for the fifth straight time. Hug, who has now won seven Chicago races, finished with an unofficial time of 1:21.34 to break his 2023 course record of 1:22.37.

Lito Anker finished second in 1:30.11.

The racer who had the best chance to dethrone Hug was Daniel Romanchuk, a three-time champion. Unfortunately for Romanchuk, an early mechanical issue ended his race.
