The Angels, long rumored to be one of baseball’s most prominent sellers at the deadline, shipped Opening Day starter José Soriano to the Toronto Blue Jays for three prospects Monday.
The trade deadline is at 3 p.m PT Monday, so further trades could be coming, including deals involving left-hander Reid Detmers, shortstop Zach Neto or outfielder Jo Adell.
In exchange for Soriano, the Angels picked up shortstop Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheletti and right-hander Angel Rivero.
Interim GM John Mozeliak is scheduled to address this trade – and any subsequent deals — after the deadline.
Nimmala is the headliner of the deal. He was ranked No. 39 in the sport by Baseball America and No. 43 by MLB Pipeline. The 20-year-old right-handed hitter was the Blue Jays’ first-round pick in the 2023 draft. He rose to Double-A this season, hitting .279 with an .806 OPS in his first 33 games at that level. He missed a month with a hamstring injury this season.
Micheletti, 24, is a left-handed hitting corner outfielder and first baseman. He was hitting .251 with an .801 OPS at Double-A. The Angels have a void of left-handed power hitters in their system. Micheletti has hit 14 homers this season. He’s also struck out in just 17% of his plate appearances this season.
Rivero, 19, is a right-handed starting pitcher from Venezuela. He has a 2.36 ERA in 42 innings at the Blue Jays’ rookie-league affiliate in the Florida Complex League.
The Angels gave up Soriano, a 27-year-old who had blossomed as a starter and is still not eligible for free agency until after the 2028 season. Soriano had a 3.29 ERA in 22 starts this season.
