One person was killed and another is fighting for their life after a gunman opened fire into a fan zone used to screen the World Cup games.
The attack happened at San Pedro Square in the San Francisco Bay Area, which has seen hundreds of fans flock there to watch the football.
At the time of the shooting on Sunday night, there were no game screenings at the popular San Jose spot.
The only World Cup match of the day yesterday had wrapped up at about 2pm local time (9pm GMT).
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, the San Jose police department confirmed.
The force said in a statement: ‘Units are currently investigating a shooting in the area of N Market St and W Santa Clara St.
‘One victim was pronounced deceased on scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.
This incident is being investigated as a homicide. Several surrounding streets are closed in the area. Please avoid the area and use alternate routes.’
Gun violence plagues the US, where hundreds of people are estimated to die each day from it.
Around 44,000 people died of gun-related injuries in the country in 2024, according to the latest official statistics.
Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teenagers.
California has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States, while the neighbouring state of Nevada is considered to have the most relaxed ownership regulations.
Openly carrying a firearm is prohibited, and concealed carry is also restricted to licence holders.
Meanwhile, Nevada allows open carry for people over 18 in public places.
