A convicted sex offender who already has a child pornography conviction was released from custody pending trial on new charges of possession of child abuse materials.
The latest charges stem from a three-year investigation in Aurora, police said Thursday.
Robert Terry May, 38, faces 10 counts of possession of child sexual abuse material (with a prior conviction) and five counts of failure to register as a sex offender, according to a statement issued by Aurora police. Both crimes are felonies.
May, of the 700 block of Serendipity Drive in Aurora, was arrested April 29 without incident and taken to the Kane County Adult Justice Center, where he appeared for a detention hearing, and the judge released him under pretrial supervision conditions, police said.
May, convicted in 2014 in Kentucky on offenses related to child pornography, is due back in court May 28.
Aurora police started the child pornography investigation in August 2023 based on information received through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Crimes Against Children task force about suspected online child exploitation activity.
As part of the investigation, detectives executed search warrants, conducted forensic examinations of electronic devices and reviewed digital evidence obtained through multiple online service providers, police said.
Details on Thursday’s court hearing were not immediately available.
