Blackhawks lose Patrick Kane and early lead in defeat

The Blackhawks let another opportunity to build on one of their best performances of the season slip away Monday.

An early two-goal lead quickly was drowned out by five unanswered Avalanche goals in a 5-2 loss Monday, dropping the Hawks to a woeful 4-10-1 this season.

The news got even worse for the green-clad Hawks when Patrick Kane left during the second period with what coach Jeff Blashill later called an upper-body injury. He’ll miss at least a couple of games.

Blashill took offense with the implication that the Hawks’ work ethic was as poor Monday as it was last week against the Red Wings. Indeed, it wasn’t that poor.

But those defeats eliminated the possibility that the games against the Kings and Bruins — which Blashill called two of the Hawks’ five best games in the last four years, based on an internal metric — could turn into major turning points.

‘‘We’ve talked about this since I’ve been here: It’s an every-night league,’’ forward Oliver Moore said. ‘‘There’s teams throughout the league that do it, that bring that full compete.

‘‘I think that everyone in here wants it — like, really wants it — but we have to go out there and show that every night. There were moments in tonight’s game where we took control and showed it, but it’s just [about] elongating it over the full 60 [minutes].’’

Blashill claimed the Hawks’ internal scoring-chance tracking actually gave them a 17-16 edge in that category, but he acknowledged they committed too many penalties.

The Avalanche finally converted on their fifth power play to take the lead for good late in the second period.

‘‘They won the game, but . . . if you take the emotion or the score out from clouding your vision, it’s a pretty even game, and we lose it,’’ Blashill said.
