Boy, 17, charged as an adult in shooting of pregnant teen in Little Village

A 17-year-old boy is accused of shooting and seriously injuring a pregnant 16-year-old girl he is acquainted with during an argument earlier this month in Little Village.

Angel David Funez-Reyes was charged with felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon, according to Chicago police in a statement and a spokesperson for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. He was scheduled to appear at the Leighton Criminal Court building for a Tuesday detention hearing.

Police earlier indicated he was charged as a juvenile.

Funez-Reyes was arrested Monday in the 2000 block of South California Avenue after being identified as the person who shot the pregnant 16-year-old during a quarrel Sept. 7 in the 2200 block of South Sawyer Avenue.

She was shot at least once in her back and taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said at the time.
