Bret Baier Says He Saw “Big Brother” in China After Getting Fined on Trump Trip

Bret Baier

Fox News star Bret Baier travelled to China this week with President Donald Trump and walked the streets of Beijing with a camera crew to report on the Communist country’s practices of surveillance.

As seen below, Baier said, “Big Brother is watching. There are literally cameras everywhere in Beijing.” Baier noted that the cameras successfully deter illegal activities including jaywalking, and that “in fact, our driver parked illegally for two minutes, got a message on his phone that he got a ticket for about US$40, because they saw it on the camera.” Baier added that the government says the cameras are everywhere “to make everyone feel safe.”

Chinese journalist Li Jingjing responded to the Fox News report: “So, the story is Fox News parked illegally in Beijing and got a ticket, instead of reflecting their own mistakes, they complained it’s because of all the cameras and Communism … Getting punishment when someone does illegal things is what everyone in the society expect. But looks like they got used to impunity.”

[NOTE: Baier didn’t mention the crime rate in Beijing (the country doesn’t publish such statistics) but in January, according to the state-run news outlet Global Times, police from the capital city recorded “a new low for the century in terms of the crime rate per 10,000 people in 2025.”]

According to a 2024 report from Voice of America, “China’s official murder rate last year was 0.46 cases per 100,000 people, compared to 5.7 in the United States.”
