The cryptocurrency investor behind a £5 million gift to Nigel Farage is one of the UK’s wealthiest billionaires.

The Sunday Times’s Rich List has named Christopher Harborne as the sixth richest man in Britain, with an estimated wealth of £18.2 billion.

He has broken records for his political donations to Reform and is a new entrant on the 2026 list.

While living and working in Thailand for more than 20 years, Harborne has invested in financial companies including Tether, the crypto platform with an estimated valuation of roughly $200 billion (£149.6 billion).

His wealth could be even greater than the Rich List estimates, as some is held overseas or could not be identified by the researchers.

Harborne was thrust into the public eye after gifting £5 million gift to Farage in 2024, who is now facing a parliamentary investigation for not declaring it.

Farage has insisted the money was not connected to his political activity and was needed to pay for private security for the rest of his life.

However, asked about the ‘unusual’ size of the gift, Farage told The Sun: ‘It’s very unusual for someone to give up 27 years of their life to campaign for something.

‘This was given to me on a completely unconditional basis, but frankly it was given as a reward for campaigning for Brexit for 27 years.’

He accepted the money in the early months of 2024, and on May 10 that year, he completed the purchased on a £1.42 million house. He insists the purchase is not connected to the gift.

If he is found to have committed a serious breach of parliamentary declaration rules, he could be suspended from the Commons.

A Reform UK spokesperson said: ‘Mr Farage’s office is in communications with the parliamentary commissioner for standards.

‘He has always been clear that this was a personal, unconditional gift and no rules were broken. We look forward to this being put to bed once and for all.’

Harborne has also separately donated millions to Reform, including a £9 million donation in August 2025.

This is the biggest single donation in history to a political party from a living person.
