A motorist was issued several citations after allegedly blowing a stop sign, and hitting a 47-year-old man riding a bicycle, critically injuring him Monday afternoon in Avalon Park on the South Side.
The bicyclist was riding west in the 8200 block of South Blackstone Avenue when he was hit by a vehicle whose driver failed to stop at the stop sign around 5:30 p.m., Chicago police said.
The man was critically injured and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, police said.
The driver, a 22-year-old man, was not injured and was issued six citations, including disregarding a stop sign, no insurance, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, failure to exercise due care, failure to display state registration and no city vehicle license, police said.
At least three cyclists have been hit and killed by a driver in Chicago this year, according to Chicago Department of Transportation data.
