Tristan Peters was going to be the White Sox’ hero but the Cubs’ Michael Conforto ripped that away. Finally, the hero ended up being Edgar Quero in the Sox’ 9-8, 10-inning win Sunday, one of the most memorable in the history of the teams’ rivalry.
After the Cubs had taken an 8-7 lead in the top of the inning, Quero hit a two-run homer off Ryan Rolison, giving the Sox the series win in front of a raucous crowd of 38,608. The Sox finished off a 7-2 homestand, their best of at least nine games since 2008. The Cubs, meanwhile, lost for the sixth time in eight games.
The Sox, who had been down 3-0 and 4-1, tied the game in the fifth on Miguel Vargas’ two-run double that eluded a leaping Pete Crow-Armstrong in center field. They took their first lead in the eighth on Tristan Peters’ three-run home run off the Cubs’ Phil Maton to take a 7-4 lead.
Peters, whose homer was his first in the majors, was the preeminent story for about 15 minutes.
Sox closer Seranthony Dominguez, signed in January to a two-year, $20 million contract, immediately got into trouble by walking Alex Bregman. Vargas then spiked a throw to first on Seiya Suzuki’s grounder to third. That brought up Conforto, whose drive over the wall in straightaway center tied the game and gave the veteran outfielder another clutch hit for the Cubs.
