Extreme heat warning canceled early on third day of brutal temperatures in Chicago area
Weather officials canceled an extreme heat warning late Thursday morning for most of the Chicago area on the third day of dangerously high temperatures.
The warning was canceled for central and northern Cook County around 10:30 a.m., well before it scheduled to expire at 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
An extreme heat warning remains in place for southern Cook County, which encompasses some south suburbs.
Temperatures in Chicago were forecast to rise to 94 degrees and, with high humidity, feel like 101 degrees.
But, thanks to the early arrival of a cold front, temperatures peaked at 90 degrees at Midway Airport shortly before 11 a.m., according to weather service data.
Due to the heat, Chicago Public Schools announced that “all outdoor activities, including recess, physical education, athletics, and Out-of-School-Time activities, will be held indoors on Thursday.”
Sunny skies and an actual high of 94 degrees are expected to give way in the afternoon to a cold front and 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms, when temperatures are expected to drop, according to weather service.
Thursday’s alert was the third consecutive day of heat-related warnings from the National Weather Service.
The Chicago area was placed under heat advisories on Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures peaked at 95 degrees Tuesday and 96 degrees Wednesday at O’Hare Airport, according to the weather service.
The heat index peaked at 106 degrees Tuesday at Midway Airport, according to the weather service.
