A Cook County judge last week ordered a convicted felon to stay away from his girlfriend’s Uptown condo building and surrender any firearms.
But on Monday night, the man allegedly returned to the building and fatally shot the condo board president as he tried to protect the woman, residents told the Chicago Sun-Times.
The suspected gunman, 38, ran a few blocks before he was was shot by a Chicago police officer after allegedly aiming a gun at the cops, police said in a statement.
The man, who has a lengthy arrest record, was previously convicted of felony armed robbery and was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2013, court records show. He isn’t being named because he hasn’t been charged in the shooting.
Court records show he was arrested June 10 at the same condo building and was charged with assault and criminal damage to property. He allegedly damaged his girlfriend’s door, threw furniture off a balcony and threatened to burn down the woman’s home and kill her dog, according to a petition for an order of protection.
Judge Lisette Mojica served the man with a protective order Thursday, ordering him to stay away from his girlfriend’s condo and hand over his guns, court records show.
It wasn’t the first time he’d been arrested for allegedly damaging a girlfriend’s home, according to court records. He was charged in 2024 after allegedly throwing bricks through the window of another woman’s home, though that case was eventually dropped.
A resident of the Uptown condo building told the Sun-Times the man had been causing problems for months. She called police last week after watching him toss things from the balcony.
“He should have been stopped,” the resident said.
The condo board president, a 63-year-old man, was seen arguing with the other man around 8:25 p.m. Monday in the 4800 block of North Clark Street, according to police and building residents. The board president was shot and was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He hasn’t been identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
“He was a selfless, kind man,” a resident said. “He was stepping up to protect the building.”
An officer shot the suspected gunman during a brief foot chase that ended in the 1400 block of West Argyle Street, police said. The suspect was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition. A gun was recovered on the scene, police said.
Three officers were taken to a hospital for observation and were listed in good condition, police said.
