GOP Congressman Don Bacon (R-NE) criticized influential conservative Townhall columnist Kurt Schlichter, author of a new op-ed titled, ‘Get It Through Your Thick Heads, GOP: No Amnesty Ever,’ for leading Republicans “right off a cliff.”
Schlichter, who wants to “deport them all, including the GOP squishes,” wrote: “The pro-amnesty Republicans are not just failing to read the room – they’re failing to read the entire house and most of the neighborhood. It’s insane that in 2026 we still have a substantial number of Republican Party politicians who still don’t understand that the GOP base is done tolerating the invasion of Third World foreigners in our country, uninvited intruders who are changing its culture, committing crimes, and taking our money. We don’t want a reasonable solution. We’re not looking for an immigration compromise. We want them gone. Out. Adios. What’s so hard about that to understand?”

Bacon replied: “You are one of the GOP flute players leading the GOP right off a cliff. Poll after poll shows that the vast majority of Americans want a secure border and dangerous and folks unwilling to work to be deported. But, Americans also want decency, common sense and humanity on who we deport. Here you are failing.”
[NOTE: According to an NPR/PBS News/Marist poll in February, “after two fatal shootings of U.S. citizens in Minnesota at the hands of federal immigration agents, 65% of Americans said Immigration and Customs Enforcement has ‘gone too far.’”]
Bacon, who supports U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL)’s Dignity Bill, which would allow long-term undocumented immigrants to earn legal status through a 7-year “Dignity Program,” wrote an op-ed for the Omaha World-Herald, in which he told the story of an Omaha-based immigrant named Mariana, who is scheduled to report for removal from the U.S. on September 18, “despite having no criminal record and years of ties to the community.”
[NOTE: When Texas State Rep. James Talarico (who’s running for U.S. Senator John Cornyn‘s seat against Trump-endorsed AG Ken Paxton) shared a photo this week of 5-year-old Texan Liam Tadeo, writing that he was “just deported by ICE,” Schlichter replied, “Good.”]
