A pub that’s said to be haunted by a centuries-old ghost will be up for sale at auction this week.

The George Inn on Stone Street in Stelling Minnis, near Canterbury, Kent, has long fascinated fans of the supernatural and drawn hordes of ghost-hunters.

The Garden of England Paranormal Spirits website says punters have reported hearing the sound of muffled galloping hooves outside the pub for years.

Some claim the noises may be made by the ghosts of the four knights who murdered Thomas Becket, the former Archbishop of Canterbury who was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170.

Locals believe the men who killed him – Reginald Fitzurse, Hugh de Morville, Richard Brito and William de Tracy – may have travelled the road to reach the city on the day of the murder.

Visitors to the pub have also claimed to have seen a ghostly figure dressed in what they have described as 18th-century clothing, sitting next to a ‘spectral black dog’ inside the pub.

Although the Grade II-listed building was constructed in the mid-19th century, paranormal researchers believe the ghost could be a former pub landlord or a local lingering at the watering hole after death.

The pub closed earlier this year and is being sold as the owners wish to retire from the trade, according to the estate agents.

It is set to go up for auction at Clive Emson Auctioneers on Thursday, September 24.
