High surf advisory in place for Los Angeles County beaches until early Saturday evening
Catalina/Santa Barbara Islands, Malibu and Los Angeles County Beaches are under a high surf advisory which was released by the National Weather Service on Friday at 2:12 p.m. The advisory is in effect until Saturday Aug. 1, at 5 p.m.
“Breaking waves of 3 to 6 feet with frequent, dangerous rip currents, highest across south to southwest facing beaches exposed to southerly swells. Very strong rip currents are occuring along some beaches,” can be expected according to the NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. “High tides of 5.8 to 6.5 feet will occur in the evening hours tonight.”
“Flooding of sea water is likely around the time of high tide, over low-lying coastal areas such as parking lots, beaches, and walkways. Significant damage to roads or structures is NOT expected. There is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore,” the NWS said. “Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Do NOT drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks.”
