Hunt for attacker after girl, 16, raped in city centre gardens

An urgent hunt for an attacker has launched after a schoolgirl was raped in busy city centre gardens.

She was attacked on Friday, April 12 in the St John’s Gardens in Liverpool at about 1.50am.

When officers attended the gardens just before 2am, they found the teenager who had been assaulted by an unknown male.

The girl is being supported by specially trained officers.

Now detectives have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to.

They believe he could assist with the investigation into the distressing incident.

Detective Inspector Carla Cross urged anyone who might recognise him to get in touch with Merseyside Police.

She said: ‘Our enquiries remain ongoing and we have issued CCTV images of a man we believe could assist us.

‘We would encourage the man, or anyone who recognises him, to contact us as a matter of urgency.

‘It is important that people who live, work and socialise in Liverpool city centre feel safe and we will hope that our high visibility patrols will assist with that.

‘I would always encourage members of the public to engage with our officers and report any suspicious or unusual activity so we can take immediate action.’
