I’m a vet… there are five dog breeds I’d never buy – they’ll get you in trouble

A DOG expert has revealed five breeds which you should never own if you want an easy life.

Australian vet Dr Scott Miller, 48, said that if you’re a “couch potato” then it would be best to stick with a similarly low-energy pet, and be sure to avoid those which are very demanding with your time.

Dr Miller said Border Terriers are extremely ‘tenacious’

The Down Under dog expert told the The Sun that Cocker Spaniels in particular were “definitely not a breed you would get if you weren’t keen on exercise”.

He said: “They need an hour and a half, two hours walking every day so they need a lot of exercise – morning and night.”

He said they were “fast-paced” and “great with obedience training” and agility.

Border Collies are “exactly the same”, Dr Miller said.

“They don’t do bored, and they don’t do still, and they’re a really energetic breed.”

Another high-energy breed, Border Terriers, are extremely “tenacious” and love to investigate, explore, and “scurry about”, he said.

“They’re very busy. I think they need a lot of environmental enrichment, things to stimulate them, things to chew on.

“They can be very naughty if not stimulated enough and not exercised enough. I know that from experience.

“They’re much much a dog that will keep you on your toes.”

Dr Miller said they are a “brilliant” breed, but “they need what they need, and you need to come to the party”.

Breeds which required a lot of exercise or training also include Jack Russells and German Shepherds.

“You need to stimulate their mind as well as their body, keep that balance right,” said Dr Miller.

It comes after he outlined how he would never own a flat-nosed dog because it would leave you paying more on the insurance premium if you have had an expensive vet visit.

Which dog breeds are banned in the UK?

People tend to think of large, vicious dogs when they imagine being bitten by one.

But the truth is that many types of dogs are known to bite humans, whether provoked or not.

However, it’s important to remember that just because a breed tends to bite humans, that doesn’t mean that they all do.

British law determines five breeds of dog are illegal to own, breed, sell or give away.
