The social media star, who has more than 128,000 followers on Instagram, fell into the reservoir on Tuesday.

His friends who were with him attempted to save him but he was swept away, local media reports.

MC Diegun Md, as he was known to his fans, had earlier promised to give his followers “something live” during his visit to the artificial lake.

Brazil‘s Public Security Secretariat said: “Witnesses who were with the victim tried to save the young man, without success.

“They then called the Fire Department, which could not rescue the man alive.

“The report was registered as a suspicious death at the 4th DP of Americana, where an expert report was requested and investigations into what happened are ongoing.”

Civil police said Diego was recording content for his social media pages when he died, according to local media.

Moments before drowning, the influencer shared a number of posts to his pages which showed him enjoying acai and time with friends.

He promised he would go “live” shortly.

Diego’s brother accessed his deceased sibling’s Instagram profile several hours after the tragedy to thank his fans for their support.

He said: “Good evening to all of you who were fans of Diego. This is his brother speaking.

“Today, we received sad news that he fell into the river and didn’t return.

“After one or two hours, they found the body… My brother is dead. He passed away. I have his cell phone. I wanted to say thank you very much for the support you always gave him.”

The distraught brother described Diego as “a person who always motivated me to be like him, to seek success, not to be discouraged, to pursue my dream”.

He added: “My brother supported me very, very, very much in this life, and I’m sure he’s in a good place.”

A funeral was held for the influencer at the Parque das Palmeiras Cemetery on Thursday, April 18.

Diego was well-known for his work as a singer and a composer.

He shared videos of his compositions to his Instagram page which, along with pictures of himself – in recording studios, in cars, and shopping – and with friends and family, attracted many online fans.
