A man has died, and a woman has been critically injured after a crash following a police pursuit near Stratford yesterday evening.

Warwickshire Police said officers had tried to stop a vehicle on Birmingham Road yesterday around 5.30pm.

They added: ‘The driver of the car – a black Audi – failed to stop and made off in the direction of the A46 before travelling back towards Stratford on the A439 Warwick Road.

‘At approximately 5.44pm, the car driver is understood to have been in collision with another vehicle – a white Ford Puma.

‘The male driver of the Audi was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics.’

The driver of the second car was taken to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Several other vehicles were damaged as the black Audi tried to evade police.

The A439 is still closed from the Marraway roundabout to the junction with Ingon Lane and Sandbanks Lane.

Superintendent Steve Flavell said: ‘Our thoughts are with the families of everyone involved in this collision and we’re providing specialist support to them at this extremely difficult time.

‘We made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because a death had occurred following police contact. They have declared an independent investigation, and we will co-operate fully with their investigation.’
