New mural depicts lives of people in South Los Angeles

Artist Moses Ball revealed his latest mural depicting the lives of people in South Los Angeles, Tuesday at Colden Avenue and Flower Street.
The artwork, titled “South Central Strong,” is the latest result of a Caltrans I-110 beautification project designed to capture the area’s people and history as well as brighten up the scene along the freeway corridor.
A ceremony featuring Ball and some of the people depicted in the mural was staged on Tuesday. Among the South Central residents who attended to pose with their frames in the towering artwork were fashion designer Ron Finley — creator of the “Ron Finley Project,” who shows off his urban gardening skills in the mural — and Hassan Wells, pictured toting his daughter, Rhythm, on his shoulders.
Speakers at the event included state Secretary of Transportation Toks Omishakin, who oversees the Clean California initiative. As part of that effort, Caltrans District 7 and the L.A. Department of Cultural Affairs commissioned two other murals in South L.A.
The $2.89 million beautification project, funded by Clean California dollars, has also worked to remove trash along the freeway and install new fencing and landscaping in the I-110 corridor.
Past high-profile works by Ball include “Motivation in Motion” for the “Game On” exhibition at the California Science Center and a 2019 mural featuring such community icons as Nipsey Hustle.
