Former GOP presidential candidate and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley criticized the state of affairs in Washington this week on social media.
Haley wrote: “Washington is borrowing $60,000 a second and paying $24 BILLION a week in interest alone. Our national debt is spiraling while the House is on summer vacation and the Senate can’t wait to take their own.”
Former Republican Trump critic George Conway — who ran unsuccessfully for Congress as a Democrat in New York this year — replied to Haley: “Interesting. I think you may be right. Could you specifically name anyone else responsible for this sorry state of affairs, like, I dunno, someone acting in some kind of executive capacity.”

Haley has repeatedly been called out on social media for criticizing the state of affairs, but never mentioning President Trump by name.
Social media influencer and retired U.S. Navy Captain M.J. Singleton replied to Conway: “Nikki Haley speaks in anonymity whenever it involves this regime.”
While campaigning against Trump in 2023, on Face the Nation, Haley said she would “always” support the Republican presidential nominee, but added that Americans “are not going to vote for a convicted criminal.”
Despite Trump’s criminal convictions, she added, “Any Republican is better than what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are doing.”

Based on monthly data about the federal budget released by the U.S. Department of Treasury, including the interest costs that the federal government pays on the national debt, the Foundation also reported: “In dollar terms, interest costs reached an all-time high of $476 billion in 2022 and have approximately doubled since then. In 2025, the United States paid $970 billion in interest costs.”
