One hurt after fire in Loop restaurant fire sends smoke billowing through high-rise roof

One person was taken to a hospital after a kitchen fire erupted at a Loop barbecue restaurant, sending smoke billowing through the roof of a high-rise building on Tuesday morning, fire officials said.

The person who was injured was in fair condition, according to the fire department. It was unclear which hospital the person was taken to.

Firefighters responded to the building at 17 N. Wabash Ave. at 9 a.m. after smoke was seen coming from the roof, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

They extinguished the fire, which had started in Wilma’s Famous BBQ, which was on a lower floor of the building, the department said.

Firefighters inspected a ventilation shaft to make sure it was safe and the department did not authorize an evacuation, though some occupants may have left on their own.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
