Police shoot, critically injure suspect in a fatal shooting of 63-year-old man in Uptown

A 63-year-old man was fatally shot Monday night after an argument in Uptown, and police later shot the suspected gunman during a chase when he allegedly raised a gun at officers.

About 8:25 p.m. in the 4800 block of North Clark Street, 20th District police officers were on patrol when they responded to a call of shots fired, and found a 63-year-old man had been arguing with a gunman who he knew, police said in a statement.

During the fight, the alleged gunman opened fire at the 63-year-old, hitting him multiple times. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His name has not been released by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The alleged gunman fled and officers gave chase, finding him in the 1400 block of West Argyle Street. During the pursuit, the alleged gunman “turned and raised his firearm in the direction of officers,” causing officers to discharge their guns and shoot him, the police statement said.

Officers rendered aid and he was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was in critical condition, police said.

A gun was recovered on the scene and three officers were taken a hospital for observation and are listed in good condition.

The Investigative Response Team is investigating the circumstances involving the shootings.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is also investigating and urged anyone with information to contact them.
