Pedestrian shot near Union Station nearly clipped by shooter’s car, prompting road rage, death threat: police

Road rage apparently sparked a man to jump from his car and race after a 42-year-old pedestrian, while screaming death threat moments before shooting him in the leg during the morning rush near Union Station Thursday morning in the West Loop, according to Chicago police.

The 42-year-old was walking on the sidewalk in the 500 block of West Van Buren Street around 8:30 a.m. when a black Chevrolet Malibu with Indiana plates nearly hit him while he was in the crosswalk, according to police reports obtained by the Sun-Times.

That caused the pedestrian to kick the car, causing the driver to jump out of the car, saying he was “going to kill him,” the police reports stated.

But as the pedestrian began walking away from the area, the gunman, who was wearing a black hat and a black and white striped jumpsuit, parked on Canal Street and began following the 42-year-old before pulling out a handgun and shooting him in the left leg, police said.

The pedestrian, who could not be reached immediately by the Sun-Times, was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was in good condition.

Meanwhile, the shooter sped away in his car south on Canal Street, officials said.

Area 3 detectives continued to investigate.
